Linking Verbs-
Transitive Verbs take the objective compliments direct and indirect objects which answer the questions, "What?" or "Whom?" Only transitive verbs can be used in the Passive Voice

Intransitive Verbs are actions verbs that do not take objects. There's no answer to "What?" or "Whom?" The main difference is the use of the verb.

Linking Verbs join the subject to a word that names or describes it; verb to be. A linking verb can be likened to an equal sign and can indicate a definition. Be, become and seem are always linking verbs.

Teaching grammar can be quite simple; it is basically a name game with rules and grammar definitions. Writing itself is the best way to learn to write! Good reading is the best way to learn the correct way to use grammar. You can use creative writing prompts to encourage original writing. Grammarly has a feature that suggests similar words that can improve anyone’s writing success, prompting the writer with more specific or descriptive words.

What Is A Verb?

What is a verb? A verb is a word that expresses action, state, or being in a sentence. Verbs are either action verbs (transitive verbs or intransitive verbs) or linking verbs.

Action Verbs – An action verb is a word that expresses the action of the subject of a sentence. Its voice is formed in the active voice. Jim runs. “Runs” is the action of the subject “Jim”. See our Transitive And Intransitive Verbs Worksheets.

Linking Verbs – A linking verb, or copulative verb, joins or links, a predicate to a subject and is used to make an assertion about the subject, positive or negative. All linking verbs carry some sense of the verb “be”. Sentence structure runs like this: Subject-Linking Verb-Predicate; Fire is hot. “Fire” is the subject, “is” is the linking verb, and “hot” is the predicate. “Mice are cute.” The linking verb joins the subject “mice” to the predicate adjective “cute” affirming that mice are cute. It can be very helpful to have a list of linking verbs.

Helping verbsAuxiliary Verbs – (auxiliary means helping). A helping verb is a word that is used with other verbs to express changes of thought such as voice, mood, tense and other shades of meaning in Verb Conjugations. Helping verbs form one predicate verb, or verb phrase, when taken together with the verbs they help. It is helpful to memorize them or review them several times when learning to conjugate verbs. Use our verb worksheets as often as you need.

Check these links for the difference between a Regular Verb and an Irregular Verb. For your convenience we have constructed an Irregular Verb List and Irregular Verb Worksheets.

See our Verb Worksheets below our grammar suggestions on this page and most verb related web pages on this site.

Our Sentence Construction worksheets are designed to teach sentence structure quickly. Choose them according to subject, linking verb, predicate, action verb, adjective, adverb, preposition and conjunction. Most of our free printable verb worksheets have the definitions at the top of the page with practice learning the concept below and can be used as free teacher worksheets or even free homeschooling worksheets.

After that, choose the worksheets that describe the English parts of speech that you want to study. See the second column of our English grammar lessons web pages to see a column of proper grammar definitions listed in a learning order. This means that if you quickly take a few pages from each, you will have a good understanding of the rules of English grammar. For a deeper understanding of the grammar definitions use more worksheets from the same subject of interest. See our updated list of verbs worksheets here. If you want to check your work you can use Grammarly.

We have an excellent free Grammar Definitions Ebook that puts the basics in learning order. It is easy to read which means that in two hours you or your students can have a good understanding of the names we use in English grammar even if you are learning English as a second language (ESL). We also offer the same free Grammar Definitions Ebook repeated in alphabetical order for easy reference which makes it a double-glossary in one booklet that you can print or read from an ereader.

When a student sees sentence construction as simple sentences expanding to become compound sentences and complex sentences, English grammar lessons begin to make logical sense. English grammar lessons are simply exercises in learning the use of a word in a sentence and being able to name and define that use. Words like “personal” as with personal pronouns, and “relative” with relative pronouns still have the same meanings as in other uses. Subject Verb Agreement is similar. Agreement means agreement!

English grammar lessons teach the name of the function of the English parts of speech and the logic that they give to the sentences we write. We find that when a student copies his English grammar lessons in a logical manner that shows the English grammar rules first, he can quickly learn the rules of English grammar in a way that can last a lifetime. Learn the proper grammar rules and the grammar definitions on parts of speech on our free grammar worksheets.

If you use our grammar worksheets in “learning order” you will go through all of the basics of grammar. We offer our practice pages in manuscript and cursive writing worksheets. Remember that a “list” of verbs will have many nouns in it, both singular and plural nouns. This means that many nouns may be used as verbs. It is important when teaching verbs to include this tip since the use of the word changes its grammar definition! The use of the word in sentence construction is what defines its grammar definition. Understanding Verbs depends on this understanding. :-) A-Z Verb Worksheets teach the definitions.

Say it! Write it! Repeat it!

You can offer as many A-Z Grammar Worksheets as needed till your students understand their English grammar lessons, but don’t tarry too long since there is so much that cross-teaches the same rules of English grammar throughout the years. Also, reading good literature can give a good foundation in correct grammar over time since it models the way that we use our words well.

Teaching grammar can be quite simple; it is basically a name game. From Pre-K-Worksheets to any of our free teacher worksheets all throughout; keep your students writing! Grammarly has text enhancements to suggest better words to use which can improve anyone’s writing success!

Grammar and writing can be taught quickly and we’ve seen this quick sort of success in many students, especially those at the fourth grade level or higher! To wit, remember that the Harvey Grammar of old was ONE little 120 page book! A tiny book! The principles are simple even if the book and testing companies change the names – head noun? Determiners?

The merit to English grammar lessons is in teaching the logic of correct grammar, that there is a better way to say or write an idea so that the reader understands what the author wrote. Grammar aids clarity. There are no real levels of grammar; just a deeper use of the same rules, longer words, and more complex sentences. The rules of English grammar do not change, but we do learn more as our correspondence uses more complex sentences. The rules of grammar help the doctor, lawyer, engineer and every day laborer interpret the laws of his craft. We even depend on grammar to assemble our toys and use our electronics! Get it right the first time with Grammarly grammar check software!

We also recommend that you use these products for English grammar lessons. Phonics Road by Barbara Beers has a DVD set to train the teacher or parent to teach writing, composition and grammar. We love how it teaches correct grammar and composition together! The Writing Road To Reading has excellent technical information for teaching spelling, writing and reading lessons and has an excellent scope and sequence in the appendix. Sound Beginnings by Julia Fogassy is a condensed version of Spalding phonics that we have found most helpful in that it cuts out the academic fluff. Andrew Pudewa’s Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) has professional creative writing ideas and some free online writing courses.

We would also like to recommend the online grammar program called Grammarly grammar checking software with Plagiarism Detection for older students. Grammarly has grammar software that allows the user to upload his work for 150 grammar checks with detailed error explanation, plagiarism detection of unoriginal text, text enhancements to suggest better words to use, and other checkers like contextual spell check to spot misused words and to suggest replacement words! The plagiarism finder notes when your text matches text from the Web (a benefit of Grammarly being an online grammar program with grammar check software) and suggests MLA format, APA format, and Chicago formatted preformatted references! Imagine having a resource that teaches the MLA writing format and the APA writing style for references! Do you find yourself using the adjective “great” too often? Grammarly suggests words that improve the readability of your text with content-optimized synonyms.

We would also like to recommend the Reading Pen for older students as it voices the word it scans and has a giant spelling dictionary of 600,000 vocabulary words which would enhance any reading comprehension activities especially in the sciences where one understands how to say a word better when he hears it spoken. The definition of vocabulary words is right there with the correct spelling of words and the English parts of speech as well. The best reading comprehension activities teach more vocabulary words! You can buy the Reading Pen by Wizcom here.
