At A-Z Worksheets learning a list of Subordinating Conjunctions makes recognizing simple, compound and complex sentences easier for diagramming sentences. It is also helpful to memorize a list of prepositions since they indicate whole phrases that can be set aside in a sentence diagram until the sentence construction is clear. Then, add the prepositional phrases where they fit as adjective phrases or adverb phrases. Prepositional phrases are not usually used to form noun phrases. What is an adjective? What are adverbs, nouns and pronouns?
Conjunctions - A conjunction is a word, or group of words, that joins sentence parts, sentences, and paragraphs. A conjunction does not take an object as does a preposition.
There are, generally, subordinating conjunctions, coordinating conjunctions, correlative conjunctions (which are the same as correlative coordinating conjunctions). As with the English grammar definition of many terms, descriptive words usually have the same meaning that they have in other uses. Conjunction means to join, subordinate means less in order, coordinate means with order, and correlate means with relation. You can also learn a list of prefixes to make this art easier as well as being one of the best ways to improve your English vocabulary.
Common Coordinating Conjunctions (with order): and, but, but not, or, nor, for, yet. They can be rearranged to form the acronym FANBOYS.
Correlative Conjunctions (with relation) work in pairs to join words and phrases of equal importance: both . . . and; just as . . . so; not only . . . but also; either . . . or; neither . . . nor, whether . . . or.
Subordinate Conjunctions (Subordinating Conjunctions) (under or lower order) join a dependent clause to an independent clause: after, although, as, as far as, as if, as long as, as soon as, as though, because, before, considering, either, however, if, in order that, since, neither, so that, than, then, though, unless, until, when, whenever, where, whereas, wherever, whether, while.

Sentence diagramming is easier when you can tell the difference between a simple sentence, a compound sentence, and a complex sentence. Compound-complex sentences are easier to recognize, too. Get familiar with the list of Subordinating Conjunctions below to make it easier.
Another help with diagramming sentences is to use the Punctuation Worksheets to learn the punctuation rules; they frequently define phrases and clauses. Good sentence construction is also easier when you understand the capitalization rules since capitalized words frequently show the subjects and objects in a sentence. The rules of English grammar only capitalize words that are used as nouns or are used in noun phrases and noun clauses, as with book titles.

When a student sees sentence construction as simple sentences expanding to become compound sentences and complex sentences, English grammar lessons begin to make logical sense. English grammar lessons are simply exercises in learning the use of a word in a sentence and being able to name and define that use. Words like personal as with personal pronouns, and relative with relative pronouns still have the same meanings as in other uses. Subject Verb Agreement is similar. Agreement means agreement!
Say it! Write it! Repeat it!
You can offer as many A-Z Worksheets List of Conjunctions as needed till your students understand their English grammar lessons, but dont tarry too long since there is so much that cross-teaches the same rules of English grammar throughout the years.
