What Are Parts Of Speech?

Parts of speech are word classifications, the name we give a word for its use in a sentence according to its meaning and use.

There are generally nine parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, verbals, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.

What Are Nouns?

Nouns name persons or things. Easy. A noun is a name. This applies to higher levels of grammar, too, “nominative” simply means name. If a word is in the nominative case it names a thing. Remember that a place is also a thing. The noun “river” can be a place or it can be a thing dependent on how it is used in the sentence. The same is true of many words.
