Nouns, Pronouns, and the possessive and relative adjectives (which are part pronoun) have case. Case is the form of a noun or pronoun that indicates its sense relation to other words in a sentence. The nominative case shows that a noun or pronoun is the subject or predicate compliment of a verb. The objective case shows that a noun or pronoun is the object of some other word (direct object, indirect object, or object of the preposition). The possessive case shows that a noun or pronoun denotes ownership and is an adjective case meaning that it frequently makes adjectives out of nouns.
Objective - An object is a word, or a group of words, that completes the meaning of the verb in a sentence, an object does not do the action. In the sentence, “Girls learn sewing.” the word “sewing” is needed to complete the predicate “learn”. Those verbs that require the addition of an object to complete their meaning are called transitive verbs.
Direct Object - A direct object is the noun or pronoun that receives the action of a transitive verb in the ACTIVE voice and is formed in the objective case. A bug hit Ann. “Ann” is the direct object of the verb “hit”.
Indirect Object - An indirect object is the noun or pronoun that receives the direct object and is formed in the objective case. Ann gave him a cookie. The word “him” receives the direct object “cookie”.
Object Of A Preposition - The object of a preposition is a noun or pronoun that is linked to the rest of the sentence by the preposition. It is on the table. The word “table” is the object of the preposition “on”.

What are prepositions? A preposition is a word that has a noun or pronoun as its object and begins a phrase ending in that object that links that same object in relation to the rest of the sentence. Hint: Think of the meaning of the word pre- (before) position.

When a student sees sentence construction as simple sentences expanding to become compound sentences and complex sentences, English grammar lessons begin to make logical sense. English grammar lessons are simply exercises in learning the use of a word in a sentence and being able to name and define that use. Words like “personal” as with personal pronouns, and “relative” with relative pronouns still have the same meanings as in other uses. Subject Verb Agreement is similar. Agreement means agreement! Linking means linking, as in linking the subject to its predicate noun, pronoun, or adjective. A List Of Linking Verbs helps to clarify and enrich one’s original and descriptive writing.
English grammar lessons teach the name of the function of the English parts of speech and the logic that they give to the sentences we write. We find that when a student copies his English grammar lessons in a logical manner that shows the English grammar rules first, he can quickly learn the rules of English grammar in a way that can last a lifetime. Learn the proper grammar rules and the grammar definitions on parts of speech on our free Indirect Object worksheets.
If you use our grammar worksheets in “learning order” you will go through all of the basics of grammar. We offer our practice pages in manuscript and cursive writing worksheets. Remember that a “list” of verbs will have many nouns in it, both singular and plural nouns. This means that many nouns may be used as verbs. It is important when teaching verbs to include this tip since the use of the word changes its grammar definition! The use of the word in sentence construction is what defines its grammar definition. Nouns in the objective case are called objects and pronouns must agree with this case if they are used as direct objects, indirect objects or objects of a prepostion.
Say it! Write it! Repeat it!

The merit to English grammar lessons is in teaching the logic of correct grammar, that there is a better way to say or write an idea so that the reader understands what the author wrote. Grammar aids clarity. There are no real levels of grammar; just a deeper use of the same rules, longer words, and more complex sentences. The rules of English grammar do not change, and as our correspondence uses more complex sentences. The rules of grammar help the doctor, lawyer, engineer and every day laborer interpret the laws of his craft. A list of linking verbs can make instructions more clear and specific as can the proper use of the direct object. We even depend on grammar to assemble our toys and use our electronics! Grammarly grammar check software can help you get it right the first time!
