Welcome to Diagramming Sentences at A-Z Worksheets! Why don't grammar lessons include the charts that show where the parts of speech fit on the diagram? Take a moment to scroll down real fast to see how much we have on our pages, and then read what is of interest to you. Throughout our site we also recommend many elementary education worksheets and homeschool software!
A-Z Worksheets aims to make many of the basic skills like the correct spelling of words and the math facts easy to learn. Also, many of our downloadable practice worksheets are several PDF pages long, meaning that the worksheets icon may have 3 printable worksheets and others may have a dozen. . Many of our grammar worksheets are simple enough to choose as 3rd grade worksheets since many 3rd grade students can understand the principles of sentence structure.
See our left nav bars for the easiest view of which grammar lessons are available on this site. Use Ctrl F to find a phrase on any page. Use our Search page to find a page that has the most references to the phrase you search. At the bottom of the Search page you can search again with a new phrase.
For each elementary education subject we offer, our suggestions for teaching the specific topic are at the top of the web page and then our suggestions for teaching the subject in general follow. Our worksheets are below our explanations and suggestions. Our goal is to offer all that you need to teach the topic of the web page in one-stop convenience for you, especially if you are new to the subject, or new to teaching. Once you get used to using our site, you can skip the explanations and suggestions, and go straight to the worksheets.
Diagramming sentences is easy once you (1) know the English parts of speech, and (2) know where those parts fit on a chart. Have you ever seen a chart that teaches where the subject, the verb and the object fit? We hadn't for very many years! The usual offering is simply an example of a sentence already placed on the diagram which can still leave a beginner wondering! We have, to this day, only seen one old book that did place the words subject-verb-object in their proper places on the diagram, and that must have been quite the feat since the words were handwritten! See ours below our ideas and suggestions.
Sentence diagramming shows the logical relation of grammatical terms to each other so that an author, or speaker, can logically convey his message to the listener. The nature of speech is to communicate truth. If the listener does not understand what the speaker said there is no communication. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, and the ordinary layman cannot expect others to do what they prescribe if they do not follow the grammar rules and definitions in their writing.
English, for ESL students to know, is a mathematically logical language. The double negative in English means a positive as with multiplying two negative numbers. An English proposition is very much like a mathematical equation, especially when it uses linking verbs. A truth, or untruth, is affirmed of the subject by the predicate, and it describes (predicate adjective), names or defines (predicate nominative) the subject. There are three predicate complements: predicate noun, predicate pronoun, and the predicate adjective. If you consider that both nouns and pronouns are in the nominative case, there are only two predicate complements! The one names and the other describes! It is simply a matter of naming the function of the words and what the words do in a sentence.
The equation 2 + 2 = 4 can be written in words grammatically: Two and two are four. (Remember subject verb agreement when the subject is plural! :-)
In the example of action verbs the subject acts (active verb) on the object or the subject is acted upon (passive verb).
After that, learning a list of conjunctions and a list of prepositions makes finding the clauses and phrases easier so that you can recognize them by their first words and then put them where they go on the diagram. Again, use our nav bars or Search page to go the topic you want to learn, or teach, to find more grammar worksheets.
These Diagramming Sentences images can be found with the Grammar definitions on our printable reference sheets and Diagramming Worksheets toward the bottom of this page. See the left columns for other related printable Grammar worksheets and use this image section as a sentence diagramming guide. Each of these has a diagramming sentences worksheet below at the green icons.
Teaching the answers to grammar questions can be quite simple; it is basically a name-game with rules and grammatical terms with definitions. Writing itself is the best way to learn to write! Good Reading is the best model of correct grammar.
Our Practice Worksheets make teaching grammatical terms easier since they have the grammar definitions at the top of the page with practice learning the concept below. Most grammar questions can be answered easily once the student knows the definition and the use of a word in a sentence. As with all of our free printable worksheets, our grammar worksheets can be used as free teacher worksheets, free homeschooling worksheets, or free ESL worksheets. Quickly read our short and free Grammar Definitions Ebook as an overview of the grammatical terms taught on this website. The first half is in learning order so as to get a definition of what a proposition is. Our worksheets compliment these definitions, although we do add better concepts as we find them. Many books or websites do not make the logical connections necessary for diagramming sentences. We update our web pages with the easiest way to teach the topic of the page for this very reason.
Our Grammar Definitions Ebook is linked back to the best pages on this site for finding specific worksheets (otherwise use the second nav or Search). It is easy to read, which means that in two hours you, or your students, can have a good understanding of the in English grammatical terms even if you are learning English as a second language (ESL). Review and/or memorization is the next step. We also offer the same free Grammar Definitions Ebook repeated in alphabetical order for easy reference which makes it a double-glossary in one booklet that you can print or read from an ereader. The free Grammar Definitions Ebook is available separately in alphabetical order, also.
After that, choose the Grammar Practice Worksheets that teach what you want your students to study. Do you have specific grammar questions? See the second column of our Grammar web pages to see a column of grammatical terms listed in a learning order. This means that if you quickly take a few pages from each, your students can have excellent practice of the rules of English grammar whether you are a child or an adult! For a deeper understanding of the grammar definitions use more worksheets from the same subject of interest. If you want to check your work, or your students' work, you can use Grammarly, an awesome English grammar checker software program. Truly, an adult using grammar exercises for ESL students would only have to read over the grammatical terms as examples.
When a student sees sentence construction as simple sentences, expanding to become compound sentences, and complex sentences, the grammatical terms begin to make logical sense. A-Z Grammar Worksheets are simply exercises in learning the use of a word in a sentence, and in being able to name and define that use; the grammatical terms are at the top and grammar exercises are at the bottom. Words like “personal” as with personal pronouns, and “relative” with relative pronouns still have the same meanings as in other uses. Subject Verb Agreement is similar. Agreement means agreement! See more choices of the pieces and parts of diagramming sentences are at our left nav bars.
Working on your own, or needing ideas for your students?
Grammarly has a feature that suggests similar words that can improve anyone’s writing success thereby prompting the writer, or teacher, with more specific or descriptive words.
Grammar and writing can be taught quickly and we’ve seen this quick sort of success in many students, especially those at the fourth grade level or higher! To wit, remember that the Harvey Grammar of old was ONE little 120 page book! A tiny book! The principles are simple.
We also recommend that you use these following products for English grammar lessons that complement our A-Z Language Arts Worksheets:
Phonics Road by Barbara Beers has a DVD set to train the teacher or parent to teach writing, composition and grammar. We love how it teaches grammatical terms and sentence construction together. It has its own grammar worksheets that help a student learn the basics for diagramming sentences.
The Writing Road To Reading (WRTR) has excellent technical information for teaching spelling, writing and reading lessons and has an excellent scope and sequence in the appendix. It has a section for teaching sentence construction that is scripted so that you can get an idea of what to say to your students. The WRTR is considered the Cadillac of language arts books by many school systems.
Sound Beginnings by Julia Fogassy is a condensed version of Spalding phonics that we have found most helpful in that it cuts out the academic fluff. It is concise with excellent reference charts.
We would also like to recommend the Reading Pen for older students, as it voices the word it scans and has a giant spelling dictionary of 600,000 vocabulary words which would enhance any reading comprehension activities; especially in the sciences where one understands how to say a word better when he hears it spoken. The definition of vocabulary words is right there with the correct spelling of words and the English grammatical terms as well. The best reading comprehension activities teach more vocabulary words! You can buy the Reading Pen by Wizcom here.
