A-Z Worksheets aims to make basic skills like the correct spelling of words easy to learn. Many of our downloadable practice worksheets are several pages long, meaning that the worksheets icon may have 3 printable worksheets and others may have a dozen. Choose even 3rd grade worksheets from our free printable English parts of speech worksheets, correct grammar definitions, and the principles of sentence structure. For each elementary education subject we offer our suggestions for teaching the topic of the web page and then our suggestions for teaching the subject in general. Our worksheets are below that. Our goal is to offer all that you need to teach the topic in one stop convenience for you.
Adverb – An adverb is a word that expresses a quality of a verb, it modifies a verb, an adjective, a participle, or another adverb and many are formed by adding the suffix ending –ly and can be a pronoun (his), phrase, clause, or many other words that are otherwise used as other English parts of speech especially adjectives. (See why they look tricky to learn?!)
There are five classes of adverbs: of time, of place, of cause, of manner, and of degree.
Time answer the questions: When? How long? How often? (After, again, always, early, frequently, hereafter, immediately, lately, never, now, often, seldom, then, when…)
Place answer the question: Where? (Above, anywhere, away, below, far, forth, here, herein, there, somewhere, yonder, backward, first, second, third…)
Cause answer the question: How? (Therefore, when, why…)
Manner answer the question: How? In which manner? (Amiss, anyhow, badly, easily, indeed, no, perhaps, somehow, sweetly, well…)
Degree answer the question: How much? How little? (Almost, chiefly, enough, even, equally, little, mainly, much, more, nearly, only, partly, scarcely, too, wholly)
An adverbial phrase is a group of words used to modify a verb, an adjective, a participle, or another adverb.
(hat in hand, hand in hand, in general, no more)
A conjunctive adverb is an word that joins two propositions one of which is used adverbially (to modify a verb, an adjective, a participle, or another adverb).
(I shall finish when it arrives.)
Three adverbs are compared by adding –er, -est to the positive form, or simple form: fast, faster, fastest; often, oftener, oftenest; and soon, sooner, soonest.
Adverbs that are formed by adding –ly are usually compared by adding more and most, less and least before the positive form: wisely, more wisely, most wisely.
Some are compared irregularly: little, less, least; well, better, best.
Good is an adjective and well is an adverb; both positives form their comparative and superlative with better and best (good, better, best; well, better, best)

When a student sees sentence construction as simple sentences expanding to become compound sentences and complex sentences, English grammar lessons begin to make logical sense. English grammar lessons are simply exercises in learning the use of a word in a sentence and being able to name and define that use. Words like “personal” as with personal pronouns, and “relative” with relative pronouns still have the same meanings as in other uses. Subject Verb Agreement is similar. Agreement means agreement!
English grammar lessons teach the name of the function of the English parts of speech and the logic that they give to the sentences we write. We find that when a student copies his English grammar lessons in a logical manner that shows the English grammar rules first, he can quickly learn the rules of English grammar in a way that can last a lifetime. Learn the proper grammar rules and the grammar definitions on parts of speech on our free grammar worksheets.
If you use our grammar worksheets in “learning order” you will go through all of the basics of grammar. We offer our practice pages in both manuscript and cursive writing worksheets. Remember that a list of verbs will have many nouns in it, both singular and plural nouns. This means that many nouns may be used as verbs. It is important when teaching the use of an adverb to include this tip since the use of the word that defines its grammar definition.
Say it! Write it! Repeat it!
You can offer as many A-Z Grammar Worksheets as needed till your students understand their English grammar lessons, but don’t tarry too long since there is so much that cross-teaches the same rules of English grammar throughout the years. Also, reading good literature can give a good foundation in correct grammar over time since it models the way that we use our words well.

Grammar and writing can be taught quickly and we’ve seen this quick sort of success in many students, especially those at the fourth grade level or higher! To wit, remember that the Harvey Grammar of old was ONE little 120 page book! A tiny book! The principles are simple even if the book and testing companies change the names – head noun? Determiners?
The merit to English grammar lessons is in teaching the logic of correct grammar, that there is a better way to say or write an idea so that the reader understands what the author wrote. Grammar aids clarity. There are no real levels of grammar; just a deeper use of the same rules, longer words, and more complex sentences. The rules of English grammar do not change, but we do learn more as our correspondence uses more complex sentences. The rules of grammar help the doctor, lawyer, engineer and every day laborer interpret the laws of his craft. We even depend on grammar to assemble our toys and use our electronics! Get it right the first time with Grammarly grammar check software!
We also recommend that you use these products for English grammar lessons. Phonics Road by Barbara Beers has a DVD set to train the teacher or parent to teach writing, composition and grammar. Sound Beginnings by Julia Fogassy is a condensed version of Spalding phonics that we have found most helpful in that it cuts out the academic fluff.
